As the title says, it's well built. I am using it for my backup drive to store media. Doesn't take up space on my drive, and I am in love with the USB 3.0 technology it has. The transfer rate is fast when I'm backing up my music. I was worried about the power supply producing noise but I was wrong. It's very quiet when its operating.
I recommended this product to a friend who wants to backup his laptop to an extra HDD he has, showed him how it works and he loves it! I would recommend it to you if you backup a lot of data.

I bought this because the mother board went out on my desktop computer. I received it today and was able to follow the instructions and hook the drive directly up to my laptop. I was able to recover all my wedding files and all my important documents thanks to this drive. This was a total life saver, and it truly is a plug and play. Thank You so much
Functions as advertised. I plugged in two drives -- a 5-year-old 640GB Seagate and a 10-year-old 250GB WD. The former spun up, mounted and worked as expected. The latter emitted clicks of death as expected. Switching out drives was quick and painless. I expect to go through my collection of old drives pretty quickly thanks to this handy dock.
However, I have to subtract a full star because of the ridiculously short USB and power cables (24" a piece, it seems). The unit is currently awkwardly perched at the very edge of my PC tower and I had to move my other devices to clear room for it. I can replace the USB cable as that's standard, it's the power cord I can't easily replace. So now I have to get a USB 3.0 hub so I can move the unit closer to the power strip. Sigh.

I have used this a few times with great results, but recently used it to help in my converting my mid-2012 Macbook Pro to a solid-state drive. This came in extremely helpful as I used it to hold my new SSD while I reformatted it to work with my mac and to install my Yosemite operating system. It was much quicker than my internal drive. One nice feature is that I was abel to externally boot up several different hard drives using this dock. I've had trouble booting externally using different Seagate drives.
I'm really impressed with the versatility of this drive as well as the speed. Yes the cables are a bit short, but I'm still able to have the AC power cable reach from the floor to the desk placement hidden under my monitor stand. I'm now using this as a more permanent attachment to my computer rather than just as a tool to transfer data between drives.

Simple device that works as designed. I love that it is USB 3.0 capable. I had a time capsule backing up my data. The time capsule stopped working 1.5 years ago without any error messages. I was able to recover documents off an old drive from the laptop I thought was being backed up daily. I thought for sure the drive was dead and got back family photos and lengthy documents - that's priceless.
I had a hard drive crash on my wife's computer so I bought this to see if I could recover it. Using Disk Management tools in Windows, I was able to delete all partitions and create a new partition on the HDD just by inserting the HDD into the slot and turning it on. This thing has been used for multiple 2.5" SDDs and multiple 3.5" HDDs and has worked flawlessly each time.
It is extremely simple to operate; just plug it into power (too bad it has a power brick that takes up 2 outlets on my power strip), plug in the USB 3.0 cable, insert your hard drive, and turn it on. I then go into Disk Management to erase/modify partition and other information. If you don't need to do that, this little gem acts just like a USB flash drive that you can copy content to for whatever reason.
Now if only it could accept IDE HDDs...

Works perfectly! I rebuilt a PC recently and needed to move the data from 3 internal hard drives to one larger internal hard drive. This worked flawlessly while transferring data and is a huge convenience when switching drives. There is a power button on the back so you can power your drives down before changing them. I have only used 3.5" drives thus far, but I'm confident 2.5" will work just as well.
After a rough start, this has been fabulous. I have a a hard drive USB adapter cable, but it can't handle high capacity drives, so it's time to upgrade. The cable was a lot better than an enclosure for temporary situations, like prepping a new hard drive, or doing data recovery. Even so, docking knocks the socks off of a cable! It's compact, and looks tidy, so I won't feel I have to put it away after each use. My new 4TB drive snapped right in, and seated on the first try, and when I powered it up, it was promptly and properly recognized.
I did have a little trouble at first with the USB connection cycling on and off. My system could not keep the drive connected long enough to get started formatting. I plugged it into my laptop in another room, and all was well. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the USB ports on my PC, and spent quite a while troubleshooting them. I couldn't uncover any problems, and decided to test the only other major difference between my PC and laptop experience: the outlet I'd been using. It turned out that the power strip I was using seems not to be providing enough power to the dock. I replaced that, and the dock became perfectly stable. I
It lives up to its USB 3 rating, as well. copied 1.3 TB without a hitch in what felt like about an hour.

At first I was worried that it would topple over. I was proven wrong, its heavy and keeps the hard drive upright, with non slip pads preventing it from shifting. Nice... at first I had issues with this product as it would not open but it was the hard drive error and not the product itself. I ended up having to wipe my hard drive and it instantly opened. Easy to use and great for future hard drive problems with other computers. I recommend this product to everyone!!
I don't have a large need for this tool, but I was disappointed in the functionality of the wires that connect drives directly to the computer. I do deal with hard drives from time to time, swapping them in and out, and transferring data, and this kit is just the tool. I like the fact that it has an off button, so that you can safely disengage the drives, and I like the fact that it works on both notebook and desktop drives. Also, I like the fact that it is very simple to set up and use. The thing I don't like it is that it is bulkier than some of the other solutions, putting a little stress on my storage space.
I got this so I can go through all my old stuff on a few old desktop hard drives I had from my old computer. I got a Windows 7 HP laptop & it hooked up to it almost instantly. Works fine & hooks up fast.
The only real problem I have with the desighn is it can't connect to old school ribbon cable 42 pin hard drives. I was hoping to access data from three of those old school hard drives but couldn't. It only hooks up to the more modern laptop style ports on both newer desktop & laptop hard drives.
It fits the 3.5 hard drives pretty well & transfers data with ease. One out of the four 3.5 hard drives I have will actualy fit in this thing. I just wish they included an adapter for the older 42 pin ribon cable drives.
I also got a used 500 GB laptop hard drive I wanted to format for a PS3 to upgrade from the stock 160 GB hard drive. It hooked up nicely & I was able to vew & delete all the old files from the computer it used to be hooked up to. Sadily the laptop hard drive was going bad much sooner than I was hoping it would so I guess I gotta get a new hard drive if I still wanna upgrade my PS3 HDD.

Really happy with this. I replaced a hard drive in my iMac and had problems with the TimeMachine backup, things went from bad to worse as I couldn't unmount the new hard drive to reformat it to try again. I still had the original drive that was functioning and decided the best course of action would be to get a dock for it and do the backup from it. After checking Amazon, I settled on the iDsonix USB SATA hard drive docking station. It was a breeze to use, the unit came with all the needed cables and is plug and play. Once the cables were connected, I plugged the drive in and powered up, the iMac recognized it and after downloading Super Duper from the web the transfer to the new drive was done(in 4 hours). The iDsonix worked flawlessly and it's design is great as the drive is simply plugged in, nothing to open up, unscrew, etc. This would work very well to make a backup drive.
If you're at all inclined towards any personal computing DIY tasks, you know the drill: an operating system gets corrupted, a motherboard fails, you come across a spiffy new hard drive at a price you can't refuse...or you're just trying to get the last troubleshooting done that confirms your previously happily spinning hard drive has turned into a paperweight...
Quite often the answer for these situations is an external hard drive enclosure. All of the ones I've used in the past (for both IDE and SATA interfaces) have included screw mounts and sliding trays (and in the case of IDE, power and data cabling). None were hard to use, but each evolution of opening, closing and securing the enclosure with screws added time to the real task at hand (whether diagnosing the drive's operation or accessing its contents.
This product solves that problem. Simply load your SATA drive (accomodates both 3.5" and 2.5" drives; I tested with a 3.5" drive) into the docking station, connect the USB 3.0 cable, and Windows (in my case) recognizes the newly attached drive. If attached to a USB 3.0 port, you get USB 3.0 transfer speeds; it's backwards compatabile to USB 2.0 also.
Includes a power switch and activity LED. Immediately recognized by both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers.
Awesome enclosure; select with confidence.

I have owned this item for 30 minutes and I want to hug it. I have a Seagate external hard drive that just stopped working for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, on this drive I had stored all photos (scanned photos from childhood) of me and my husband. I have tax returns saved as PDF files on it and I thought all was lost. I spoke with people about what to do and everyone said take it somewhere and have the data retrieved but it is expensive. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money but my biggest worry was a stranger is going to see my tax returns. I decided to google ways to extract data from hard drives and a you tube video showed the iDsonix and it looked way too easy. I hopped on Amazon and paid 22.00 or so and it arrived today. It was so easy I am still in shock. Truly, I plugged in the device (power and usb) and inserted my hard drive and everything was there in my free agent drive F: - I HAVE EVERYTHING BACK!!!!!! I am so happy it was hard to type this because words can't express my relief.
Aside from it's intended use of creating an exact copy of a drive I'm about to upgrade or simply replace it has also come in very handy for recovering data for friends when their computers die. Of course the answer I always get from anyone when I ask if they have current backups is always no. Recovering files from a Windows partitions is always tedious but much appreciated by anyone who was thinking that they lost their picture collection forever and I always volunteer my time to friends without charge. But I have been gifted with some to-die-for chocolate chip cookies and brownies.
Nothing is worse then the dreaded "hard drive failure" on your computer. It happened to me and we were unable to load the old information from the drive to the new one. With this we could read the old drive and move any information I needed to the new one with no hassle and I didn't lose any information. I was relieved that I found this product and it worked so well. The product is so easy to used. It arrived on time and works well. I still have it connected several months later. I can retrieve any other information as needed.
