These hard drive storage and carrying cases from iDsonix are made of opaque, anti-static plastic and come in beautiful colors like those Michael Graves uses: grey, olive, blue, lavender, and gold. They are intended to hold 3.5 in. hard drives vertically. There is an area to affix a standard 2 in. x 4 in. label on the sides or enough room on the spine for a standard label up to 1 in. high or a Sharpie can be used to mark it directly. The walls have internal ribs and there is a secure snap lock. When the lid is open, it is easy to grasp the hard drive for removal and there is a foam cushion inside it. When the lid is closed, it provides excellent protection against dust and spills. The plastic material is not labelled for recycling, although the frustration-free packaging is 100% recyclable. These hard drive cases are much more attractive and a bit sturdier than others that I've seen.
I use loose hard drives and a dock for backing up some data, and these cases make it a breeze to keep them organized. I don't think they would do much to protect the hard drive in a drop (not like the cardboard retail box with thick foam padding would), but they do keep the dust off and protect the PCBs on each drive from damage.
Very high quality, and works fine for me. I do computer security, and have a bunch of hard drives laying around. I finally decided to get them a bit more organized and protected after I added two new computers to my lab. These were the ones I picked, mostly for price. So far, so good. I'll no doubt buy them again.
And for a five pack, only $15??!!! You can't go wrong ordering these. They were just what I needed for all the internal HDs I have.
These items were exactly what I needed and arrived exactly as they were described to be. I imagine the hinges, being a bend in the molded shell, could give way after multiple uses but I am, mostly, storing the disks not accessing them repeatedly. Like anything else, if treated as intended, I don't anticipate any problems for the foreseeable future. I am very happy with this purchase and will, probably, be buying more soon!
The iDsonix case is a carrying case, not an enclosure, meaning it can't be used to convert an internal hard drive into an external hard drive. It's made of durable hard plastic with a secure plastic latch. Inside the lid, there's a piece of foam to cushion it a little. This is sufficient, but a larger piece of foam would help with aesthetics. I use the hard drive cases to store all the hard drives from my old computers. One box of these comes with five cases in five colors. I love the color coding feature. It would be nice if labels came with them, also. Nevertheless, this is a great way to protect and store old internal hard drives.
As both a computer geek and a photography geek, I have dozens of hard drives which archive old files (and old photos) I need to preserve. These cases are an inexpensive, durable, and colorful answer for my needs. I especially like the colorful selection - which allows a visual cue to what each box contains. I was a bit worried at first because it is an incredibly tight squeeze to get the hard drive inside the box, but I believe this design is intention to avoid having it "rattle around" and possibly damaging the surface-mount electronics on the bottoms of the drives. It would be nice if they would offer a 10-pack in different colors - since I still have a lot of other drives to store.
This is a set of 5, in the colors in the picture. There is a label on the side as well for making notes. I picked these up to put some off site hard drives into a safety deposit box for backup. There is a small piece of foam in the bottom that serves to keep the drive from moving in the box. They are slightly hard to close, because the foam has to compress. So far, I haven't had any issues using drives that I stored in them, put in the safety deposit box, and pulled back out to write more backups to.
